AEIOU offers a program that develops the skills of the child in the following areas:
- Social interaction and play skills
- Cognitive development
- Self-help/tasks of everyday life
- Communication
- Sensory integration
- Fine and gross motor skills
The program is individualised and tailored to meet the specific needs of each child and family.
Comprehensive assessments are undertaken prior to acceptance into the program, and each child has their program reviewed on a weekly basis.
A group of specialist practitioners including teachers, an occupational therapist and a speech pathologist are involved in every child's program.
Staff will work with families to ensure that learning is carried from the educational setting into the childs home environment.
The children participate in a combination of small group activities and one-on-one time with staff. The small groups join together for meal times, and some free play.
Features of the program include:
- Reduction of challenging behaviours, involving a process of assessment and positive behavioural support.
- Tasks promoting academic, self-help, and motor skills.
- Communication and language skills, including expressive, receptive, and pragmatic.
- Social interaction and appropriate play, joint attention, and relationship development.
- Routine and predictability are ensured through the use of visual supports, structured activities and consistency.
- Small group activities, to develop peer interaction skills.
- One-on-one work to encourage specific skill development.
- Larger group tasks to give children experience in this social environment.
- Home visits and parent education workshops to assist in the development of home-school collaboration and consistency across settings.
Weekly timetable
The AEIOU program hours are 9am to 2:30pm Monday to Friday (9am to 12pm Wednesday), the centre hours are 7:30am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday. Children ideally attend the program in a full-time capacity for maximum benefit.
Measurement of Outcomes
AEIOU recognises the importance of being accountable to families and other stakeholders, and is dedicated to demonstrating the efficiency of this unique program. The children are therefore assessed on intake, and then again at regular periods throughout the program, so that their progress can be clearly documented.
These standardised assessments will be complemented with parent interviews and observation assessments to gather data on areas such as self-help skills, play skills and social interaction. Each child's program will be evaluated frequently and adjusted where necessary .
Transition and Continuity
AEIOU's ultimate goal is to have our students transition into mainstream schools and other educational settings. AEIOU will work with the individual child and school to determine the level of support required during the transitionary period. This will vary from child to child, and will be assessed on an individual basis at the time of transition.
Eligibility
To be eligible for enrolment at AEIOU, a child must meet the following criteria:
- Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder OR Pervasive Developmental Delay
- Aged between 2-and-a-half and 5 years of age at intake.
Children who meet these criteria must then undergo an assessment by AEIOU staff to determine suitability for the program.
AEIOU also considers parents and siblings of students to be an integral part of the program, and families must therefore be willing to work with AEIOU to achieve the best outcomes for their child and the entire Unit.
