Early Childhood Teacher

Position Description

The role of the Early Childhood Teacher is to collaborate with the therapeutic team to provide appropriate early intervention programs based on the Early Years Curriculum to meet the individual needs of children. It involves face to face teaching, integration support, family support and staff supervision and training.

Key Duties

  • In collaboration with the therapy team the Early Childhood teacher is responsible for:
  • The provision of intervention, including program planning, monitoring, assessment, and reviewing as well as the making of educational materials.
  • Supervision of teacher assistants in the implementation of IEP's (individual education programs.)
  • Liaising with parents in relation to the development and implementation of IEP"s at school and in the home and communicating with parents their child's developmental needs and behavioural support strategies.
  • Consultation with the therapy team to include individualised therapeutic goals and objectives within the Early Years program.
  • The shared development of a team approach to sharing information and ideas. 
  • Provision of assistance to the team in toileting and personal hygiene and participation in lunch time and playground supervision.
  • Working with other team members to ensure consistency and continuity in the intervention of the student.
  • Contributing to the communication book and maintaining contact with parents regarding the student"s educational program.
  • Suggests methods of enhancing student care, streamlining treatment and introducing new equipment, literature and procedures.
  • Reporting on the development and implementation of educational programs to the Centre Co-ordinator.
  • Reporting issues of concern regarding students or staff to the Centre Co-ordinator.
  • Attendance at regular weekly staff meetings, case conferences, and IEP meetings.
  • Demonstrating to staff specific intervention techniques and strategies in relation to the educational program.
  • Demonstrating to parents and care-givers specific intervention techniques and strategies in relation to the implementation of homework activities/home programs.
  • Contributing to in-service and staff development days.
  • Contributing to cross team training to ensure consistency in approaches implemented.
  • Maintaining currency in developments in Special Education and in the field of autism.
  • Participation in related continuing education programs, workshops, seminars, conferences and clinics.
  • Working as a member of a collaborative team in sharing housekeeping duties and ensuring that equipment is maintained at an optimal level.
  • Contributing to weekly staff meetings in order to assist in the facilitation of effective communication, staff development and discussions on operational procedures.

     

 Selection Criteria:

1.       Recognised early childhood teaching qualifications (degree or equivalent)

2.       Demonstrated teaching experience with children with special needs.

3.       Demonstrated understanding of the Early Years Curriculum and instructional approaches for students with special needs especially Autism.

4.       Demonstrated leadership experience in a collaborative interdisciplinary team within an educational setting

5.       Demonstrated capacity to develop, implement and promote effective communication strategies with staff, parents and external agencies.

6.       Understanding of and experience in providing positive behaviour support strategies.

7.       Demonstrated ability in assessment and delivery of educational and therapy services to students with disabilities.

8.       Sound understanding of IEP development.

9.       Current Blue Card and First aid certificate

Additional Criteria which would be desirable:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in Special Education.
  • Previous experience in an educational setting providing services to students with Autism.
  • Competent IT skills.
